About Sach Pass
Sach Pass, located at a height of about 14,500 ft is an extravaganza of adventure and pristine natural beauty and one of the most difficult and dangerous passes to visit in North India. With roads that are unwelcoming to novice drivers and bone-chilling temperatures, the trip to Sach Pass is as electrifying as the pass itself.
One amongst the top attractions of Dalhousie – one of the most pristine hill stations of Himachal Pradesh and a getaway for numerous tourists every year, Sach Pass runs over the Pir Panjal Mountain that connects Dalhousie with the Chamba and Pangi Valleys. Situated about 150 kilometres from Dalhousie this pass is a haven for adventure lovers. The car drives and bike rides boast an unparalleled thrill and are the reason most visit the pass when it is open. For those who prefer not to take a risk, it is even possible to hire experienced drivers from the locals to explore or take you across the pass. Not stopping there, the region even offers other adventure sports and is a famous trekking point from Dalhousie. Additionally, Sach Pass is the favoured route among the locals to reach the Chamba and Pangi Valleys. It is also the shortest way to Killar and has substantially reduced the travel distance between Pathankot and Leh. As a result, the pass is also used extensively by the Indian Army.
During the winter months, the area receives heavy snowfall and the road has to be cleared on a daily basis. The massive walls of snow stretch along the route all the way to the end and the route offers a breathtaking view of the natural surroundings like the panoramic landscapes, snow-covered mountain peaks, narrow ravines and deep valleys. Sach Pass is the perfect escapade for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts and is a must visit for absolutely everyone!
What are some of the highlights in Sach Pass?
Sach Pass is the perfect spot to test the adventurer within you. The pass has a few highlights that are as nerve-racking as they are fun and are sure to give you an adrenaline rush.
Sach Pass Trek
This alpine trek has gained and managed to maintain its popularity as one among the most difficult treks in India. It requires some serious acclimatization to the weather and is only recommended for those who have experience with high altitude trekking. The trekking trail leads you along tricky glaciated trails, across lush terrain, dense forests and ancient temples. One of the most hair-raising experiences, the best time to try this trek is during the summer months.
Sach Pass Bike Expedition
This expedition is over one of the most challenging routes and is for the thrill seeker in you! Again, a nerve-tingling experience, the biking trail takes you along gurgling streams and narrow, rough terrain, through thick forests and snowy roads with numerous bends, twists and muddy patches. Although riding across this uneven terrain is an absolute delight, it is not advised for beginners at all. The best time to try this expedition is also during the summer months.
What is the best time to visit Sach Pass?
The temperatures at Sach Pass are moderate between the months of June and October, but decrease as you get closer to the top of the pass. At the top of the pass, the cold winds keep the temperature low while the nights are cold in the entire region. Sometimes temperatures in Sach Pass have been known to drop to 0°C even in the summer!
The best time to visit is between the first week of July and September end since one finds enough snow but it is also safe as compared to the rest of the year. Other than perfectly clear days, the pass stays closed since the heavy snow and rainfall make the region susceptible to landslides.
